Shining Star Schools have significantly outperformed the State average in serving ALL kids, with an emphasis on closing the opportunity gap. Public Charter School
Public Charter Schools are public schools of choice and are open to all students. They operate with freedom from some of the regulations that are imposed upon district schools, yet are held accountable for academic results and student achievement. Parents submit applications directly to the charter schools they want their children to attend. If a public charter school receives more applications than the number of seats it has available, the applications are drawn at random through a blind lottery.

Nevada ASD charter schools partner with communities to provide vibrant, high-quality, in-neighborhood alternatives for students in the State's chronically underperforming schools. The schools serve students in neighborhoods with few choices and can be zoned or paired with a school to be an alternate option in a zone.

Magnet Schools
A public Magnet School has a specific area of focus, such as math, fine arts, science or health. Entry to an elementary or middle school magnet program is interest-based. These programs are tuition-free, and will provide transportation for students if they live in the transportation zone. Magnet Schools are available for grades 1-10. and can be zoned or paired with a school to be an alternate option in a zone.

Career and Technical Academies (CTA)
Entry to a CTA program can be criteria, performance and/or interest-based. Parents of interested students must submit an online or paper application on or before the annually specified deadline, typically in late Fall. Students must meet the minimum qualifying criteria in order to be considered in the lottery process. If there are more qualified applicants than there are seats available, a computerized random lottery will be used to select students.

Select Schools are a new district school choice option for families. Students can choose from one of five (5) high schools that offer outstanding Career and Technical Education programs of study as well as many Advanced Placement and other specialized programs. Students that live within the designated transportation zone of the school that they choose will receive transportation.

What is TSI?
Targeted Support and Improvement Schools (TSI) meet designation criteria under Nevada's federally approved Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Plan. All Indicators in the Nevada School Performance Framework have multiple Measures and each Measure is disaggregated by 10 subgroups (American Indian, Asian, Black, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Multi-Race, Caucasian, English Learner, Students With Disabilities, Economically Disadvantaged Students). TSI schools have low performing subgroups in multiple Measures for at least two years in a row. The TSI Schools list identifies schools eligible for supports and interventions. TSI schools cannot receive a rating higher than 3-Stars in the year of initial designation.

School Climate

School Climate is assessed at the school level via a survey provided to all students in Nevada. The survey is administered by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) on behalf of the Nevada Department of Education. The survey was administered in Fall of 2020, and therefore reflects the student experience of 2019-2020 school year, prior to COVID-19. The NV-SCSEL asks students questions about the environment and conditions for learning in their schools with four main categories:

  • Cultural and Linguistic Competence tells us whether students feel that adults at school show that they care and respect the values, history, language, and experiences of students from different backgrounds;
  • Relationships tells us whether students feel that the positive interactions between adults and students create a welcoming and trusting environment for kids to learn;
  • Emotional Safety tells us how comfortable kids feel at school expressing their feelings, trusting peers and adults, and taking risks; and
  • Physical Safety tells us if kids feel safe from violence, theft, harsh punishment, and weapons at school.
